Monday, December 24th was a unique day at Full Range!  For the 2nd year, we have worked with the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County to provide 2 swimmers with a $250 scholarship, called the Full Range Scholarship!  Founder, Mike McDevitt started the Full Range Scholarship in 2018 to give back, but that’s not all!  One of Mike’s passions is coaching and over 15 years have been dedicated to the sport of swimming.  From 2004-2009, Mike was dedicated to the development and growth of the Lansdowne YMCA Marlins swimming program. It is easy to get overwhelmed with… well, life.  Sometimes you just have to “keep it simple.” As an outpatient physical therapist for the last 10 years, the most common condition I treat is the spine. It is hard to say which aspect more so, the low back or the neck- as usually they go hand-in-hand. Through extensive training in graduate school and critical continuing education, such as the McKenzie philosophy, every spinal evaluation is individualized to a person’s specific needs and goals. There has been a lot of buzz about instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, or IASTM, over the last few years!  It seems like every week there are new tools, new brands, and new trainings being developed, with some of the most familiar being Graston or HawkGrips.  But really this type of treatment has been around for a very long time.  IASTM is really a descendant of the art of Gua Sha.  Gua Sha is more than 2,000 years old and originated in Eastern Asia. Now referred to as IASTM (instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization), it is a technique we use as physical therapists to treat a wide variety of conditions.  Modern day tools are typically stainless steel and clinicians employ techniques to treat most musculoskeletal conditions, including tendonitis, muscle spasms, and more.  These tools are used as a compliment to therapists’ hands to feel for irregularities in soft tissue. What is Powerlifting? Powerlifting is a sport that involves performing three weight lifting movements (Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift) during a competition. A competitor’s goal is to lift the maximum amount of weight for one repetition while maintaining strict technique. Three judges assess technique during each movement to maintain consistency among competitors. Powerlifting is essentially the ultimate test of full body power and strength.   The Common Misconception: What is the first thought that comes to mind when you think of powerlifting? Do you envision a muscle-bound man, maybe with the bulky physique of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger?
